GPS tracking kids

When it comes to GPS tracking our kids, our attitude is that you are required to supervise the child up to a certain age limit. It’s never okay to leave a small child alone. This is an attitude most people share with us.

GPS tracking kids is becoming a popular thing, but is it okay?

The question of supervising someones location begins when the child is old enough to go to school alone. We then talk about the first years when the child begins to move outside alone. The combination of surveillance and privacy should be discussed openly.

We recommend everyone who is considering GPS tracker for kids to talk with their children. About the use of the watch, and who is tracking their location. Tail it have also taken some actions in our firmware to reduce the unhealthy type of supervising.

It is also important to mention that in our experience it is mostly the kids who wants this type of GPS watch. As a kid, getting a new watch that is also a mobile phone is incredibly cool. Knowing that the parents are just a touch of away if you need them feels very reassuring.

But for us in Tail it technologies it is still our job to take care of the child’s privacy. We have done this by customizing the kid tracker, so that it limits the monitoring to a real-time and removed the history. We have done this together with our first 10.000 customers from 2016 and 2017.

GPS Watch for kids Test with our customers

In cooperation with our 10,000 first users, we got great feedback on both hardware and software. The GPS watch for kids are mainly used to call and to give real-time location of the child. There was also functions that our users were essentially not interested in seeing. Like which way home from school the child took, or what areas in the schoolyard the child was playing in.

We feel that this approach to live location and location history is crossing the line to become an unhealthy monitoring of the child. Going into retrospect, monitoring every move was therefore not desirable for anyone. But it was desirable with a real-time image of location when needed. Not to see where the child has been all the day, down to the smallest detail.

As an example could be if the child had not returned home from school at the right time. Anyone who has children knows that the way home from school can be filled with distractions, that can make the trip take a bit longer than usual. It was desirable for parents to open the app to see where the child was, and not to see unhealthy GPS tracking for kids.

We removed several tracking features to increase kids privacy.

This means we removed “live tracking” and “history overview” from our watches. Removing live tracking also increased battery life by 300%, which was much more important for our users. We also encrypt all communication in and out of the watch, app and server. This way, it is not possible for unauthorized people to break in, to access the child’s location or personal data. There have been reports regarding this issue across Europe lately. A lot of similar GPS devices use unencrypted APPs. These apps has personal data stored on servers in China without it being possible to identify who has access to the servers. These servers contains personal information, and its not possible to know who the information is shared with. Our products, app and servers comply with the strict privacy requirements under the new European Privacy Policy GDPR.

Full control of who has access to the location.

We have also made further improvements and updated the APP’s user interface. These updates gives users control over who has access to the child’s position and personal data. Our app is also designed to only ask for user data that is strictly necessary for the service to work. It is the user who owns his user data, where Tail it does not take care of user information and deletes location history continuously.

We have designed the Tail it app for privacy by design and privacy by default.  The app is designed to store only as little personal information as possible for the service to work. If you forget to use the APP or stop using it, no problem.  Your account will be automatically deleted with all your information without having to take action.

Safe sharing of kids location

We’ve made it easier to share access simply and securely in the app, and by constantly showing who has access to the child’s location on the screen. We have also removed the backup solution to receive GPS information via SMS commands found in most GPS systems today. At Tail you can only receive location and personal information through our APP, which uses encrypted communication with our encrypted servers.
